Vacation Plans? How to Prepare

(Part 1 of a 2-Part Series)

Summer Vacation Plans Skvarna

After months of near confinement in our homes, most Americans are stir-crazy. As such, we are eager to travel to make vacation plans. As more states are open, take these precautions before your summer travels.

Heed Summer Vacation Plans Released by the CDC

The CDC issued recommendations for travelers outside of their local communities within the US. (International travel is more complex. However, many countries prohibit entry by non-citizens.) So, take following precautions for anyone traveling to another community:

  • Is COVID-19 spreading in your community or in your destination? Since you could spread the virus to another community, this is important. You could spread the virus even if you’re asymptomatic. In addition, the presence of numerous COVID-19 cases in your vacation destination could lead to you and/or your family becoming infected.
  • Do travel plans require anyone to stay within six feet of others during the trip? Being closer than six feet to others increases the chance of catching or transmitting COVID-19. Unless the airline or bus service enforces social distancing, you could be in harm’s way. Also, stopping for gas, food, or restroom breaks when traveling by car or recreational vehicle could put you and your companions at risk ofcontracting or transmitting the virus.
  • Do governmental orders in your community or your destination require self-quarantine on arrival? You could be subject to local or state orders in your community or destination which require self-isolation upon arrival. Checking this beforehand to avoid unanticipated inconvenience.

While traveling, continue to follow the safety practices from home:

  • Frequently wash your hands
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Social distance whenever possible
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.

Locate & Update Estate Planning Documents

The COVID-19 crisis underscores the importance of keeping estate plans up to date. This need only amplifies when you travel. Remember to secure the following important documents. Also, designate their location to loved ones and/or your estate planning attorney prior to departure.

Will or Trust

Do you have a will or trust? If not, create one. If so, find and review them. Take the opportunity to secure documents. Also, make sure they still accurately reflect your current goals. Taking care of this will give you peace of mind while you’re on holiday.

Check back next week, when we conclude this two-part series. In the second post, we will discuss other estate planning documents to prepare prior to your vacation. In the meantime, happy summer vacation. We hope you can find a way to celebrate despite the pandemic.
