Part 1 of a 2-Part Series
With the holidays upon us, now is to take a deep breath and spend time taking care of yourself. Take these steps to relax and minimize the effects of holiday stress:
Get a Physical to Reduce Stress
Busy people often wait until they get sick to see a doctor. Even if you feel perfectly healthy, it is important to get regular medical exams as a preventative step. This is true even (or especially) during the COVID-19 pandemic! Most of us don’t keep track of our vaccination history. However, your doctor will make sure everything up to date. Thus, you won’t risk undue exposure to disease. In addition, a physical will reveal undiagnosed medical issues, such as high blood pressure or cholesterol. Catch these before they lead to serious health complications.
Rest to De-Stress
A state of constant motion and busyness is incompatible with peace of mind (and productivity). In fact, failing to rest your mind and body will lead to decreased productivity. Don’t just hope you will catch a free moment now and then. Instead, schedule this time. Be humble enough to realize that the rest of the world will continue to function even if you are not around for half an hour! Also, make sure you get plenty of sleep.
Stress Less by Hydrating
Our bodies are comprised of 60% water—and drinking sufficient water is essential for your body to properly function. Bodily fluids aid digestion, absorption, and transportation of nutrients. They also service blood circulation, saliva production, kidney, and bowel function, and help maintain proper body temperature. In addition, drinking water instead of high-calorie beverages may help you lose weight. Water intake is especially important during physical exercise. as well. Dehydration results in muscle fatigue. Last but not least, dehydration can age and weather skin. So, proper hydration improves appearance.
Exercise
Obviously, exercise offers myriad health benefits. It helps prevent and/or manage health conditions such. These include diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, stroke, many types of cancer, and obesity. As you age, exercise strengthens bones. It also lessens the effects of osteoporosis. Physical activity also helps relieve depression and anxiety. These result when the brain releases mood-elevating chemicals. People who exercise regularly enjoy more energy, stronger muscles, and a cardiovascular system than their dormant peers.
Check Your Estate Plan
According to the American Psychological Association, money causes stress for many Americans. Lessen money-related anxiety by planning for the present and the future.
